What is copper sulphate molecular formula and its Use?

ECHEMI 2022-11-16

What is copper sulphate molecular formula? Copper sulphate is a coordination compound with the formula CuSO4. It has a long history of use as an agricultural and textile preservative and can be synthesized by reacting copper metal with sulfuric acid; it also precipitates from some mining operations as an unwanted side-effect. The molecular formula of copper sulphate is CuSO4.

Uses of Copper Sulphate molecular formula

1. Fungicide

Copper Sulphate is the first fungicide introduced by the Swiss pharmacist and chemist Jean S. Strecker in 1843. It has been used as a fungicide since then with a wide range of applications such as wood preservation, wood preservative treatment of wooden stairs, maintenance of water supply pipes in houses, fire-proofing, construction materials and also agriculture.

2. Bleaching agent

Copper Sulphate is used in the manufacture of bleaching preparations because it has the same bleaching strength as hydrogen peroxide but it allows to bleach at lower temperature than hydrogen peroxide. Copper Sulphate is used in several industries such as textile, paper, leather and printing.

3. Pharmaceuticals

Copper Sulphate is used in pharmaceutical industry as anti-microbial agent, and also for disinfection of dairy and juices. It is also used for lamination of films and textiles and in metallurgy to produce CuS.

4. Water treatment

Copper Sulphate is used in the treatment of water from industrial waste water wells because it helps to slow the corrosion of metal equipment such as tanks and pumps. It can also be used for swimming pools, pet fish tanks, hot tubs and spas.

5. Cooling towers

Copper Sulphate is used in the cooling tower water treatment to remove odor and adjust pH level of treated water. Copper Sulphate is an efficient coagulant used in the acidifying processes.

6. Metal working or remelting industry

Copper is used to treat the slag of the metal working industry or remelting processes to produce copper silicate material for electrical insulators, lightweight heat exchangers, building materials, etc.

7. Fertilizer industry

Copper Sulphate is used to manufacture copper sulphate fertilizer and also as a fungicide in agriculture. It's also used to manufacture copper oxychloride in the refining of alumina and as a catalyst, converter, stabilizer and co-catalyst in the synthesis of polymers.

8. Copper biosorption

Copper sulphate is used as a bio-sorbent in the purification of copper ore.

9. Metal processing

Copper sulphate molecular formula is used in metal processing industry to remove impurities from the ore, it is also used as a flux in welding and soldering processes because it promotes the fusion of the metal when iron and steel are metallurgically joined. Copper sulphate can be added to the iron ore with sodium chloride which makes iron smelting more efficient by reducing slag volume.

10. Photography

Copper Sulphate is used to make photographic paper because it is a good counter-stain for bromide paper. When it is added to the developer solution of modern Ilford and other makes of British paper to enhance its contrast and reduce fog in the developing process, it reduces the amount of silver used in printing process.

11. Antioxidant and preservative agent in mining copper ore

Copper Sulphate is used as an antioxidant and preservative agent in mining copper ore, it helps to prevent oxidation of copper sulfide mineral, it also keeps the surface of the copper mineral free from dirt and other impurities that may cause pollution when the copper mineral is exposed to air. Copper sulphate prevents contamination of underground water by preventing leaching of acidic waste and also eliminates fire hazards associated with smelting operations. It's also used for extraction of gold from its ore, or from solutions containing it by precipitation from solutions obtained in cyanidation processes.

12. Ceramics, metallurgy and glass industry

Copper Sulphate is used in ceramics, metallurgy and glass industries because it's used as a form of corrosion inhibitor, flux, fluxing agent and stabilizer. It's also used to manufacture copper sulfate cement which is used in ceramic products such as tableware. Copper sulphate is also used to manufacture copper selenide and telluride which are components of semi-conductors and photovoltaic cells respectively.

Conclusion

Copper Sulphate molecular formula is CuSO4. It's been used since approximately 1843 as a fungicide and also as an organic bleaching agent. An organic bleaching agent is a chemical that whitens by removing or changing color of the material to be bleached. Copper sulphate is also used in numerous other fields such as metal processing, water treatment, photography and fertilizer production.
