The formula of ferric ammonium sulphate is Fe(NH4)2SO4. Ferric ammonium sulphate is a water soluble form of iron used as an algae retardant in swimming pools and hot tubs. Ferric ammonium sulphate has a solubility of 13000 g/L. This allows the plant to absorb the nutrients that it needs, which is why it is used in fertilizers. Ferric ammonium sulphate is a weak acid, with a pKa of 6.4. This means that it is acidic and that it reacts rapidly with water and other substances. In fact, at a pH of 2 ferric ammonium sulphate can release hydrogen ions into solution which can damage cells and tissues in living organisms such as plants and animals. As with all weak bases, it will also react with carbonate-, bicarbonate-, or phosphate buffers in solution to form salts that are in turn easily wash out through the aquarium water from the filter medium or from the rocks in the aquarium.
6. Water Column
At 20℃ (68℉), the density of ferric ammonium sulphate is 2320 kg/m3. This means that it is not very soluble in water and therefore will precipitate out of solution when it is introduced into water. The pH of the water column in an aquarium can be adjusted by adding bicarbonate buffers like sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) or calcium carbonate (CaCo3) that react with hydrogen ions to form carbon dioxide and calcium ions.
7. Cuttings
The chemical formula for ferric ammonium sulphate is Fe(NH4)2SO4. Because ferric ammonium sulphate is a weak acid it can be added to the water column of an aquarium to cuttings to provide essential nutrients that help them grow faster.
8. Degradation of ferric ammonium sulphate

The process of degradation occurs through the disintegration of the iron hydroxide compound from the shells and then transporting it over land to a water source. This process takes a very long time, usually taking thousands of years for this to occur. However, for some strange reason, when iron is in the water column of an aquarium, as it decomposes it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form iron carbonate and oxygen. This is referred to as rusting. After this occurs it falls down through the water column into the gravel layer at the bottom where it will stay until you clean your aquarium or change its gravel layer.
