Norwegian land-based producer Salmon Evolution harvested its first finished fish

In November, Norwegian land-based producer Salmon Evolution harvested its first finished fish, with around 30,000 Atlantic salmon shipped from the Indre Aroy farm to the nearby Vikenco processing plant over a seven-month cycle.

Salmon Evolution CEO Trond Hakon Schaug-Pettersen told UCN, "Our use of the hybrid flow-through system and our focus on providing good biological conditions and water quality for fish seem to be paying off today." We achieved a 95-97% survival rate for the first salmon. ”

The so-called mixed flow water system refers to the combination of circulating aquaculture system and flowing water system, about 65% of the aquaculture water body is continuously recycled, and the other 35% is regularly added and replaced.

"Especially in terms of water, our approach is different from RAS, we don't rely entirely on advanced treatment equipment, the only thing we have to do is constantly add clean seawater, remove carbon dioxide and fill it with oxygen. This is also a traditional model used by Norwegian fry producers. Schaug-Pettersen said.

"Salmon Evolution's strategy is to be successful in Norway first. We have built the Indre Heroy plant into the best land-based farming facility in the world, and we plan to bring this experience and expertise, along with our employees, overseas. ”

As a next step, Salmon Evolution plans to expand in North America, and the project site may be anywhere in the United States and Canada, the specific location has not yet been determined.

"We have secured some options for the land, but the permitting process has a long review period and due diligence has started early. Over the next few quarters, we will conduct site selection evaluations and finally narrow the site visit to areas that meet two main criteria: the location of the shoreline and the water source at a specific temperature. These are two of our necessary conditions, because we are going to take water from the deep sea (50 to 100 meters), so the northwest is a very suitable area, and the east is also feasible. ”

Schaug-Pettersen said Salmon Evolution's technology is well suited for South Korea, with a joint venture with local company Dongwon Enterprise to build a 16,000-ton "KSmart" plant, which is currently in an advanced stage of construction and engineering and licensing applications are in full swing.

In 2021, South Korea imported about 60,000 tons of salmon, mainly from Norway. "South Korea is a high-income market, and sashimi products are very attractive. It is also the perfect hub for supplying China and Japan, serving the Chinese and Japanese chilled markets without air freight. ”

Land-based production also requires improved operational performance and reduced energy consumption to reduce production costs, with a farming cost of $5.13/kg (NOK 50/kg) and an average energy consumption of up to 5.8 KWh/kg at the Norwegian site, Schaug-Pettersen said.

"In the second quarter of 2023, our Norwegian site will start harvesting the second batch of salmon, the biomass is increasing, the third batch of fry has also been released, soon we will release the fourth batch of fry, and every two months thereafter, after autumn, our harvest cycle will be more regular."

According to Schaug-Pettersen, the market feedback for the first land-based salmon was positive, "Customers tell us that the taste, texture and color of the fish are very good, and the fillet yield is significantly higher than that of cages of the same size." We see a number of market advantages, and this will be the key for us to increase the premium of our products. ”
