Bulgaria plans to introduce regulations on sugar consumption requirements

On December 12, 2022, the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture issued a consultation document on the development of a regulation on the consumption of sugar, with a feedback period until January 11, 2023. The main contents are as follows: (1) Scope of application: requirements on the name, characteristics, composition, label and analysis method of sugars for human consumption, not applicable to sugars in the form of sugar powder and sugar cubes; (2) Sugar classification and index requirements: 11 kinds of sugar, such as white sugar (invert sugar content no more than 0.1%), granulated sugar (invert sugar content no more than 0.04%); (3) Sugar product name provisions: Sugar names can be added to the easy-to-accept explanatory statements, can not mislead consumers in the composition and characteristics of food, less than 5g of pre-packaged sugar labels can not indicate the net weight, sugar liquid, invert sugar liquid, invert syrup should be labeled with dry matter and invert sugar content, contains crystallization of invert syrup, must be added in the name of the word "crystallization" requirements; (4) Determination methods of carbohydrate indexes: detection methods of dry matter, reducing sugar and other indexes; (5) Additional terms: "ICUMSA Unit" shall be the unit of calculation for the ICUMSA (International Committee on Uniform Methods for Sugar Analysis) method; %w/w is the percentage by weight.
