High sugar prices in Bangladesh show no signs of abating

Bangladesh's Daily Star newspaper reported on December 13 that despite factories ramping up sugar production, sugar prices on the market remain high and show no signs of abating.

 
In July this year, due to the shortage of foreign exchange, Bangladesh's natural gas imports declined, and the sugar factory suffered a shortage of natural gas. In the months that followed, sugar prices soared. Some time ago, the price of sugar soared from 90 taka per kilogram to 125 taka per kilogram. Although the current supply of natural gas is relatively abundant, the retail market sugar price is still at a high level, and the retail price is still around 110-120 taka per kilogram.
