What is the laboratory preparation of chlorine and safety measures
The laboratory preparation of chlorine is a project that is done by many chemistry students in order to learn more about the topic. The preparation starts with preparing a solution of sodium chloride, which is then oxidized by letting it react with potassium chlorate. This will produce a solution of sodium chloride and chlorine gas. It can be prepared using the following ways;
1. Using sodium chloride and potassium chlorate
The first step is to dissolve sodium chloride in water. Then, add the potassium chlorates into it. It is then heated up until the chlorine starts to come out. There should be a strong smell in the air during this process which will let you know that it has been working correctly. When all of the potassium chlorates have reacted with the sodium chloride, there will be a mixture of sodium chloride and chlorine gas as well as liquid water at the end of this process. 2. Using calcium hypochlorite and calcium sulfide
Take a solution made by boiling water mixed with calcium hypochlorite until all of it becomes clear and begins to smell like bleach or rotten eggs. 3. Using sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, and copper chloride
This solution is prepared by cooking together sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, and copper sulfate until they are dissolved. This solution can then be poured into a beaker of calcium hypochlorite and heated up until the chlorine gas is produced. It can then be collected in a vacuum flask and stored at high temperatures under pressure.
4. Using calcium chloride and copper chloride
This solution is made from copper sulfate and calcium chloride, which are added to water to create the solution. This solution should then be heated up until the chlorine is formed from the reaction between them, which will happen fairly quickly. To collect the gas, use a syringe to suck the gas out of it by using some light bulbs as containers for it to keep it under pressure or in a vacuo flask at high temperatures without any oxygen or moisture entering it.
Safe measure to take
1. Keep any reaction that produces chlorine in a well-ventilated room
This is to make sure that gases stay out of your area as much as possible, so there will be no danger of breathing them in. Also, it is not likely that you will breathe them in by accident because when they are inside the container, there isn't enough pressure for air to go up through to the gas.
2. While working with the solution, wear gloves
This will protect your hands from any acidic solutions that may accidentally touch them. Also, if there is any chlorate or hypochlorite in the room, you will not have to worry about getting it on your skin. However, while using solvents such as alcohol or carbon tetrachloride, you need to make sure that you are wearing eye protection because these substances will make your eyes burn which can lead to an accident. To keep the solutions away from your nose and mouth at all times, wear a face shield because these chemicals can also damage them.
3. Sanitize any glassware used in making a solution
This is because the glass can be corrosive to your skin and can cause an accident if you drink it or burn yourself on it. In cases where there are small amounts of chlorine left over in the solution, which is usually the case when using calcium hypochlorite, carbon tetrachloride, or other strong acids, you should sterilize it by using a flame to heat it up. This will make sure that the chlorine does not get into your body through your mouth and lungs. Also, wear gloves while doing this as well because some of these chemicals can burn your skin as well.
4. Do not store the chlorine in glass containers
This is because it will eat away at them, which can cause the glass to explode. Also, do not fill a container up all the way because this will increase the pressure in it. If you do this, make sure that you have a safety valve on it so that it does not burst while you are carrying it around. The best materials to store chlorines are platinum or iron containers because they are resistant to corrosive substances.
In conclusion, laboratory preparation of chlorine is one of the most common experiments that students in chemistry do. It is one of the easiest ways to make chlorine, however it takes some skill to do it well because you do not want to breathe in any of the gases that are created during this process or get them on your skin.
