A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has occurred in Niger

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), on January 2, 2023, Niger's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported to WOAH that an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of type H5N1 occurred in Niger.

 
The outbreak occurred in the province of Tillabery and was confirmed on 20 December 2022. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Clinical and laboratory tests found that 1,000 birds were suspected to be infected, of which 500 became ill and died, and 500 were killed and disposed of.
 
The outbreak is still ongoing, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Niger will submit a follow-up report on a weekly basis.
