foodmate 2023-01-17

The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) said in a statement that Chinese companies, including Dole China, Shanghai Jianong and Dashang Group, have pledged to buy Philippine durian.

The Philippines plans to export $260 million worth of durian to China, which will be sourced from registered farms in the main durian-producing areas of Davao City, South Davao and North Cotabato.

During his visit to China in January, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reached a $2.09 billion purchase of fruits, including coconuts and bananas. According to the Protocol on Plant Quarantine Requirements for the Export of Philippine Fresh Durian to China, 50,000 tons of Philippine fresh durian will be allowed to enter the Chinese market.

The Regional Land Office of the Philippines will coordinate with the Philippine Plant Industry Authority (BPI) and the Department of Agriculture's High Value Crop Cultivation Program to increase durian production capacity, ensure production of varieties preferred in the Chinese market, develop packaging plants and assist with marketing. At the same time, the Philippine Plant Industry Authority will expand its support for certified farms and promote the implementation of good agricultural practice certification and protocols in the Philippines.
