Energy Corridor Between Pakistan, Tajikistan Could Improve Regional Connectivity

A conference held by Tajikistan’s embassy and Centre for Global Studies (CGSS) on Monday emphasized for execution of an energy corridor between Pakistan and Tajikistan.

This corridor would allow it to connect with South and Central Asia, improving regional connectivity which would help to decrease poverty, according to participants, reported Express Tribune.

The conference titled ‘Pakistan-Tajikistan; Exploring New Dimensions of Bilateral Cooperation’ saw an address from CGSS Chairman Muhammad Zahirul Islam.

CGSS Chairman told the energy corridor would be advantageous for all regions and Tajikistan was a leader in energy resources.

Mr. Islam believes both Pakistan and Tajikistan need to work together and take practical steps for execution of this corridor.

He added Pakistan provided the shortest way possible to Tajikistan and highlighted Gwadar Port could have a major role in enabling connectivity to other regions mentioned above.

Also, Mr. Islam that to raise people to people contact, Tajikistan required to initiate direct flights and proposed the business community to setup a business council for increasing bilateral trade.

Tajikistan’s Ambassador, Sherali Jononov gave a presentation regarding the CASA-1000 power import project and indicated it would help in reducing power outages in Pakistan during peak season and substitute costly furnace-based electricity generation with environment friendly hydropower.

Mr. Jononov added Tajikistan had electricity in abundance, which could be exported to Pakistan for meeting its energy requirements.

He said the CASA-1000 project will give 1000 megawatt of electricity to Pakistan to address its power shortages.

And a joint commission has been setup by Pakistan and Tajikistan for development of energy cooperation and efforts are abounding to finalize documents for signing.
