Coffee and tea both may prevent diabetes

2020-09-22

The results of a large epidemiological study published in JAgricFoodChem, the ACS journal of agri-food chemistry, showed that people with regular coffee drinking habits had a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. One of the pooled analyses, with a sample size of more than 450,000 people, found that drinking three to four small cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of diabetes by 25 percent, and each additional cup of coffee reduced the risk of diabetes by 7 percent, compared to non-coffee drinkers.

In fact, tea has a similar effect. The Diabetes Research Center at the University of Düsseldorf in Germany conducted a study involving 26 research centers in eight European countries, with participants including 12,403 people with type 2 diabetes and thousands of non-diabetics, and found that drinking four cups of black tea a day reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 20 percent. However, drinking 1 to 3 cups of tea a day did not seem to work to prevent diabetes.

For type 2 diabetics, tea and coffee have several other benefits: slowing digestion, increasing antioxidants, protecting pancreatic cells, and helping to prevent obesity.

However, the benefits of coffee and tea here do not include drinks with added sugar, and whether to drink coffee or tea to control blood sugar, or according to the body to determine, for example, some people drink black coffee prone to hypoglycemia, then have to reduce drinking, diabetes patients can not control blood sugar, but affect other aspects of physical health, and finally, but not conducive to long-term blood sugar control.
