An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has occurred in Slovenia

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 27 February 2023, the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food informed WOAH of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Slovenia.

The outbreak is in the Goleniska region and was confirmed on 24 February 2023. The source of the outbreak is contact with wild species. Post-mortem and laboratory tests found 1053 birds suspected to have been infected, of which 316 became ill and died, and 737 were killed and disposed of.

The outbreak is still ongoing and the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food will submit weekly follow-up reports.
