An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 occurred in Israel

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), on November 23, 2022, Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported to WOAH that an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of type H5N1 occurred in Israel.


The outbreak occurred in the Northern Region and was confirmed on 22 November 2022. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Clinical, autopsy and laboratory tests revealed that 4,000 birds were suspected to be infected, of which 200 became ill and 120 died.


The outbreak is not over yet, and the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will submit a follow-up report on a weekly basis.
