Total signs power purchase agreements with Sasol and Air Liquide
French energy giant Total Energy has signed a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) aimed at decarbonizing Sasol and Air Liquide production in South Africa. That said, Total Energy has signed the CPPA with Sasol South Africa and Air Liquide South Africa Large Industries. According to the agreement, Total Energy will provide the two companies with approximately 260 megawatts of renewable electricity production capacity within 20 years.
A 120-megawatt solar power plant and a 140-megawatt wind farm in the Western Cape province of South Africa will provide green electricity, Total Energy said in its statement. Both projects are awaiting regulatory approval in South Africa. Total Energy will supply approximately 850 GWh of green electricity per year to Sasol's Secunda plant, where Air Liquide operates the world's largest oxygen production site, the statement said.
Green electricity from two projects by Total Energy will decarbonize production at Sasol and Air Liquide. The agreements also cement Total Energy's position as a major contributor in the evolution of South Africa's energy mix.
Vincent Stoquart, Senior Vice President Renewable Energy, Total Energy, said: “South Africa still relies on coal for 80% of its electricity generation and experiences blackouts on an almost daily basis. With these developments, we are proud to support Air Liquide and Sasol Provide them with green electricity. At the same time, we are happy to contribute to South Africa’s energy transition, which includes increasing the share of renewable energy and natural gas as an alternative to coal.” “The CPPA market in South Africa is dynamic and we hope that Dahl Energy can take a strong leadership position."
The two projects are planned to be operational in 2025. Total Energy further noted that the CPPA was signed by Total Energy's South African marketing company (70%) with its partner Mulilo (17%) and the yet-to-be-announced B-BBEE partner (13%).
