Solvay launches new high-temperature resistant polymer
On March 23, Solvay announced that its Xydar liquid crystal polymer (LCP) product line has added a new high temperature resistant, flame retardant grade polymer Xydar LCP G-330 HH. The material is designed to meet the critical safety needs of electric vehicle battery components, addressing the challenging high temperature resistance and insulation requirements, and is especially suitable for the end plate insulation of electric vehicle battery modules using higher voltage systems.
It is reported that Xydar LCP G-330 HH is a glass fiber filled LCP for injection molding, which can still maintain excellent electrical insulation after being exposed to a high temperature of 400°C for 30 minutes. Xydar LCP is an intrinsically flame retardant polymer without additives such as halogens. In addition, it has excellent flowability, which helps battery designers develop thinner parts than existing battery module insulation materials. The material has been successfully tested so far.
Brian Baleno, head of the transportation market at Solvay's Materials Division, said: "As automakers increase the voltage of next-generation electric vehicles from 400V to 800V, new regulations in Europe, China, the United States and other countries will require battery components. It is also constantly improving, requiring it to withstand high temperatures of 300 ° C ~ 1000 ° C for up to 15 minutes. The materials used in the battery should be able to maintain a certain level of electrical insulation, so as to provide sufficient time for passengers to leave in the event of thermal runaway vehicles. Solvay’s new Xydar LCP grade meets these conditions.”
