IOC Signs Agreement for Reuse of Treated Water for Mathura Refinery
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has signed an agreement for the reuse of treated wastewater for its Mathura Refinery.
The tripartite agreement was signed on June 13, 2018 at New Delhi by Mr. L W Khongwir, Executive Director, Mathura Refinery, IOC; Mr. Rajesh Mittal, Managing Director, UP Jal Nigam; and Mr. Hitesh Makwana, Executive Director (Projects), National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).
A Concession Agreement for development of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for Mathura was also signed on the occasion. The project, which is to be completed within 24 months, will use technologies such as membrane-based bioreactors (MBRs) to meet raw water quality requirement of industries. The Mathura Refinery shall reuse 20-mlpd 20 (million litres per day) of treated wastewater from this plant.
Though the capital cost of setting up the plant is being borne by NMCG, IOC shall bear the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and power costs, and shall be paying Rs. 8.70 per kl for the treated water during the first 15 years of its operations. With this initiative by the Mathura Refinery the effluent water, which was hitherto being discharged into the river Yamuna, will be used by the refinery for industrial purposes, completely eliminating the use of fresh water for refinery operations.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, appreciated the STP model and looked forward to this becoming a case study on environment sustainability.
