An outbreak of highly pathogenic influenza A H5N1 has occurred in Japan

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 21 April 2023, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries informed WOAH of an outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic influenza A in Japan.

The location of the outbreak, Sapporo City, Hokkaido, was confirmed on April 14, 2023. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Laboratory tests found that one red fox became ill and died.

As the outbreak continues, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will submit weekly follow-up reports.
