L’Oréal Ventures into Innovation with Investment in China's Shinehigh

Cosmetics &Toiletries 2023-10-17

L’Oréal has made a minority investment in Chinese biotech company Shinehigh Innovation via the multinational beauty giant's China investment arm, Meicifang. The transaction was supported by BOLD (Business Opportunities for L’Oréal Development), L'Oréal Groupe’s strategic innovation venture capital fund company.

The investment will reportedly support the co-development of novel and sustainable beauty ingredients.

Shinehigh Innovation, founded in 2017 by Professor Jiaheng Zhang of the Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), specializes in supramolecular chemistry, "an interdisciplinary field of science involving the chemical, physical, and biological features of molecular assemblies having a greater complexity than the individual molecules themselves," according to one source.

Global cosmetics giant L’Oréal is stepping into the world of innovation with a minority investment in Shinehigh Innovation, a Chinese biotech company. This strategic move was facilitated by BOLD (Business Opportunities for L’Oréal Development), the venture capital fund linked to L'Oréal Groupe.

Shinehigh Innovation, established in 2017 by Professor Jiaheng Zhang from the Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), specializes in a field known as supramolecular chemistry. This interdisciplinary science deals with the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of molecular assemblies that are more complex than individual molecules. At the heart of Shinehigh's innovation is its smart self-assembling technology, which enables the blending of ingredients previously considered incompatible. The result is beauty products that are more effective and sustainable.

This technology offers solutions to common challenges in the cosmetics industry, including ingredient incompatibility, instability, and effective delivery in skin, hair, and scalp formulations. As a result, consumers can look forward to a broader range of benefits in the products they use.

Beyond skincare, L’Oréal and Shinehigh are also exploring applications in makeup and hair coloration. Barbara Lavernos, Deputy CEO of L'Oréal Groupe in charge of research, innovation, and technology, expressed excitement about the partnership and its potential to introduce groundbreaking innovations to the beauty market. She lauded the vibrant startup ecosystem in China as a vital driver of L'Oréal's future innovation strategy.

Fabrice Megarbane, President of L'Oréal North Asia and CEO of L'Oréal China, emphasized their long-term commitment to the Chinese market. Over the years, China has become a source of inspiration for the Groupe's future innovations. The partnership with Shinehigh is seen as a testament to the spirit of co-creation that L'Oréal values. The company has been dedicated to fostering innovation and was the driving force behind initiatives like Big Bang, which extended its footprint into the North Asia Zone.

Jiaheng Zhang, Founder and CEO of Shinehigh Innovation, expressed delight in collaborating with L’Oréal Groupe. Together, they have been researching the supramolecular development of active raw materials across various beauty sectors, including skincare, makeup, haircare, and hair coloration. This partnership holds immense significance for advancing cutting-edge supramolecular technology in the beauty industry.

With this investment, L’Oréal aims to push the boundaries of beauty innovation and continue to shape the future of the global beauty market, embracing novel technologies and solutions to meet evolving consumer needs.
