Debut and L’Oréal are developing more than 12 bioidentical, biobased alternatives to traditional cosmetic ingredients

ECHEMI 2024-07-03

California-based biotech company Debut is developing more than a dozen bioidentical, biobased ingredients to replace traditionally produced/sourced materials in L’Oréal skin, hair, makeup and fragrance products.

Previously, in June 2023, Debut completed a $34 million Series B financing round led by L’Oréal’s venture capital fund BOLD. Debut also launched its own internal proof-of-concept brand Deinde.

In the latest phase of the two companies’ collaboration, Debut will produce replacement ingredients through fermentation and cell-free technology. The project is in line with L’Oréal’s ambitious goal of using 95% biobased ingredients by 2030.
The collaboration comes at a time when the “clean alternative” trend in the beauty field is on the rise, which is said to replace traditional technologies with safer and more sustainable ingredients without negatively affecting efficacy.

"Making bioidentical ingredients at scale helps protect global biodiversity and ensures a responsible ingredient supply chain while continuing to prioritize quality and product performance," said Dr. Joshua Britton, Founder and CEO of Debut. "Debut is committed to creating bio-based formulations for all of its beauty products and has unparalleled capabilities in biotechnology, formulation and scale to catalyze this transformative shift in beauty."

"Our mission is to lead the biotech transformation. We capture value across the supply chain to ensure Debut's bioidentical and novel ingredients and products meet the huge global market demand for the next generation of sustainable beauty products. The beauty industry will be transformed to deliver lasting benefits to people and the planet."

"Through this exciting partnership and adoption of breakthrough technologies, we have the ability to drive the creation of more sustainable and effective products to meet consumer needs and meet our duty of care for the planet," said Guive Balooch, Global Managing Director of Enhanced Beauty and Open Innovation at L'Oréal. "This long-term agreement with Debut is another example of our commitment to an open innovation ecosystem and to shaping the future of beauty by working with best-in-class partners."
