Ashland Introduces Biodegradable Active Delivery System for Toothpaste & Mouthwash, Enhancing Mouth Retention

Cosmetics &Toiletries 2023-10-18

Ashland, a leading innovator in the oral care industry, has unveiled an innovative biodegradable active delivery system designed to improve the retention of active ingredients in the mouth for extended periods. This breakthrough technology, known as Gantrez™ soja delivery system, offers a wide range of benefits for oral care products, enhancing their efficacy and delivering longer-lasting results.

Ann Druffner, the global marketing lead for oral care at Ashland, highlighted the diverse range of active ingredients used in today's oral care products, including antibacterial agents, whitening pigments, and flavor additives. The Gantrez™ soja delivery system is a transformative technology that addresses the issue of quick active agent depletion in the mouth after brushing or rinsing, providing more time for these ingredients to work effectively, ultimately leading to brighter and healthier smiles.

This innovative system harnesses the power of converted soybean oil and boasts an impressive 76 percent natural origin content, in accordance with ISO 16128, 2-2017 standards. It aligns with the principles of sustainability, as it is biodegradable, vegan-friendly, non-GMO, and entirely free from microplastics.

Dr. Druffner emphasized the significance of the Gantrez™ soja delivery system within Ashland's sustainable ingredient portfolio, highlighting its potential to deliver enhanced performance benefits to consumers while satisfying their demand for cleaner, more natural ingredients.

One of the key challenges in oral care is the continuous flow of saliva in the mouth, which can rapidly wash away active agents left behind by oral care products. This issue limits the time available for antibacterial agents to take effect, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as the gum line and interdental spaces. The Gantrez™ soja delivery system has been developed to improve the retention and substantivity of multiple active ingredients in an in-vitro environment, ultimately addressing this challenge.

Petros Gebreselassie, the lead for oral care research and development applications at Ashland, explained the benefits of incorporating the Gantrez™ soja delivery system into toothpaste formulations. This technology enables active ingredients to act more slowly and for more extended periods, representing a significant advantage for consumers seeking enhanced oral care solutions.

At the core of Ashland's transformed vegetable oils technology is its multifunctional nature, serving as a dispersant, film former, binder, and delivery system all in one. This unique additive provides complete control over the dissolution of transformed vegetable oils in water, ranging from zero to 100 percent. Beyond its application in personal care, this technology extends to coatings as a sustainable alternative to synthetic additives, pharmaceuticals for improved sustained release of low-solubility drugs, and crop care as a highly efficient seed treatment.

Ashland's commitment to innovation and sustainability continues to drive progress in the oral care industry, providing consumers with advanced solutions that meet their evolving needs.
