Advancing Sustainability in Cosmetic Packaging: SK chemicals Collaborates with The Estée Lauder Companies

PRNewswire 2023-10-18

SK chemicals is intensifying its commitment to sustainability in the cosmetics packaging industry through a strategic partnership with the renowned global cosmetics brand, The Estée Lauder Companies.

On the 17th, SK chemicals officially announced the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with The Estée Lauder Companies, marking a significant step towards the integration of circular recycling solutions.

The Estée Lauder Companies stand as one of the world's foremost producers, marketers, and distributors of premium skincare, makeup, fragrances, and hair care products, showcasing a portfolio of luxury and prestige brands on a global scale. Their extensive product range spans across approximately 150 countries and territories, featuring over 20 iconic brand names, including Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Aveda, Clinique, and La Mer.

Within the framework of this collaboration, SK chemicals will provide ECOTRIA CR and SKYPET CR, innovative materials derived from advanced recycling processes, along with ECOZEN CLARO, a material designed to integrate seamlessly into the recycling stream. The Estée Lauder Companies will leverage these materials supplied by SK chemicals for the development of their packaging solutions.

Advanced recycling technology involves the chemical breakdown of discarded plastic into monomers, which serve as the fundamental building blocks for plastic production. It holds significant promise in advancing packaging-to-packaging recycling, effectively addressing plastic waste concerns through a circular and forward-thinking approach.

SK chemicals and The Estée Lauder Companies share a common objective: to progressively increase the utilization of recycled materials in their products and replace non-recyclable alternatives. Their innovative designs aim to incorporate recyclable or recycled materials, thus contributing to the realization of The Estée Lauder Companies' sustainability goals for packaging.

This agreement paves the way for the potential acceleration of sustainability efforts in the global cosmetics packaging market, as The Estée Lauder Companies and its esteemed brand portfolio embrace SK chemicals' unique recycling solution.

It is noteworthy that SK chemicals has consistently pursued the supply of recycled materials to the cosmetics packaging market, extending its commitment beyond The Estée Lauder Companies. The company previously entered into a business agreement with Yonwoo, a subsidiary of Kolmar Korea, a dominant player in the domestic cosmetics container market, for the development and commercialization of containers incorporating recycled materials. In June, another strategic partnership was formed with COSMAX, a global leader in cosmetics original development manufacturing (ODM), to establish a cooperative model for sustainable plastic materials in cosmetics containers.

In March, SK chemicals established SK Shantou, a subsidiary, and inked an asset acquisition agreement related to circular recycling raw materials and circular recycled PET with Shuye, a Chinese company specializing in green materials. This move effectively set up a global base for the recycled plastic business and a stable production system.

Ahn Jae-hyun, CEO of SK chemicals, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Through this partnership, we believe that positive synergies can be realized both in business and environmental aspects. SK chemicals, leading in circular recycling plastic technology, is joining forces with The Estée Lauder Companies, a leader in the global cosmetics market." He also affirmed the company's commitment to furthering the development of a sustainable ecosystem for cosmetic containers.
