The European Union (EU) Evaluates Renewal of Authorization for Lactobacillus buchneri DSM 19455 as an Animal Feed Additive

foodmate 2023-10-31

In response to a request from the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has conducted an evaluation on the safety and efficacy of Lactobacillus buchneri DSM 19455 as a technological feed additive. This additive is intended for use in preserving easy and moderately difficult to ensile fresh material for all animal species.

The expert panel's evaluation has led to the conclusion that Lactobacillus buchneri DSM 19455 remains safe for all animal species, as well as for consumers and the environment, when used in accordance with authorized conditions. In terms of user safety, it was noted that Lactobacillus buchneri DSM 19455 may act as a respiratory sensitiser. However, when used with inulin as a carrier, it was found to be non-irritating to the skin and eyes. The panel did not make a definitive determination regarding the potential for skin sensitization in relation to the additive.

It's important to note that, as part of the renewal of authorization, no assessment of the additive's efficacy is required. The focus of this evaluation has primarily been on safety considerations.

This assessment underscores the EU's commitment to ensuring the safety and suitability of feed additives for animal use, while also taking into account potential user safety concerns. The decision on the renewal of authorization will be made based on this evaluation's findings.
