Health Canada's 2023 Update on Food Additives: Revisions to the Usage of Amaranth in Food Products
In the context of Canada, a food additive is broadly defined as any chemical substance introduced into food during its preparation or storage, where it either becomes an integral component of the food or influences the food's properties to achieve specific technical outcomes.

Canada Food Additives
The detailed list of approved food additives and their respective usage conditions is contained within the Lists of Permitted Food Additives. This list is categorized into 15 classes of food additives, encompassing functions like anticaking agents, bleaching agents, colouring agents, sweeteners, and more. Importantly, this list excludes certain categories from the purview of food additives, such as processing aids, food ingredients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, spices, seasonings, flavoring preparations, agricultural chemicals, veterinary drugs, and food packaging materials.
Health Canada conducts rigorous scientific assessments to evaluate and authorize new food additives as well as extensions in the usage of existing additives. This article is dedicated to tracking and consolidating the regulatory changes concerning food additives throughout 2023.
On November 3, 2023, Health Canada unveiled NOM/ADM-0210 with immediate effect, modifying the List of Permitted Colouring Agents to update the permitted use of Amaranth in foods, in order to reduce the possibility of excessive dietary exposure to this food color.
