What are the plant sterols benefits? What are plant sterols? Simply put, they're the cholesterol found in plants, a broad category of chemical compounds with cyclopentane-perhydrophenanthrene groups present in plants.
Currently, hundreds of plant sterols have been discovered, and most of them are abundant in nuts, legumes, sunflower seeds, soybeans, and plant oils, including sesame, peanut, and canola oil.

Moreover, plant sterols have been shown to have an additive effect when used alongside statin drugs in lowering lipid levels.
Given substantial clinical trial evidence, the U.S. FDA allows food and dietary supplements containing plant sterols to bear health claims on their labels, stating that they "may reduce the risk of heart disease" and "lower blood cholesterol and LDL" under specific conditions, including being part of a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet and specific daily intake levels for plant sterol esters and plant stanol esters.
2. Antitumor Effects: Epidemiological studies suggest an inverse relationship between dietary plant sterol intake, especially β-sitosterol, and the incidence of various cancers, including colorectal, prostate, breast, ovarian, gastric, and lung cancers. Populations that consume a high-plant, low-animal diet, such as Asians, tend to have lower cancer rates compared to Western populations with a diet high in animal products. Vegetarians, in particular, have even lower cancer rates.
3. Antioxidant Properties: The operation of plant sterols as an antioxidant is due to their molecular shape and chemical characteristics. The electron affinity of plant sterols is due to the presence of many more double bonds, or unevenly saturated bonds, between carbon atoms. These double-bonded plant sterols can interact with free radicals, eliminating the possibility of oxidative stress causing cellular or tissue damage. Its antioxidant actions preserve the integrity of the cell membrane and safeguard the cell’s molecules from oxidative injuries hence lessening or preventing damage incurred with inflammation. In this way, plant sterols help somewhat to reduce oxidative stress, delaying the speed of cell degeneration and illness.

What are the plant sterols benefits? In addition to their effects on humans, plant sterols also have the following benefits for animals:
1. Reducing Cholesterol Content in Poultry Eggs and Meat: Eggs from poultry are highly nutritious and are a loved source of food. They do have one minor drawback: egg yolks are very high in cholesterol (200–300 mg per egg) and can become problematic with overconsumption. Plant sterols fed to animals have been shown to decrease cholesterol levels in liver plasma and inhibit cholesterol synthesis in chickens leading to reduced cholesterol in chicken egg yolk and meat.
2. Promoting Animal Growth and Health: While plant growth hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellins have some effects as growth promoters for animals, they are highly unstable compounds. They tend to degrade not only outside the organism but also inside the organism, often becoming inactive substances before they can exert their physiological effects. Plant sterols and plant growth hormones, when combined with lipids that can form molecular membranes in water, create plant hormone-plant sterol-ribonucleoprotein complexes. This increases the stability of the original plant hormones concerning environmental temperature, animal body temperature, and intracellular degradation. These ribonucleoproteins containing plant sterols enhance animal protein synthesis, thereby promoting animal growth.
3. Improving Animal Liver Function: Plant sterols can improve impaired liver function in animals and also serve as preventive agents for liver dysfunction, characterized by their low toxicity. The effective dosage for improving liver function varies depending on factors such as the type of livestock or poultry, their constitution, age, gender, administration timing, the type of plant sterols, and the extent of liver function impairment.
