Sanofi's Milestone Reveals 12 Potential Blockbuster Molecules in Immune Field
Sanofi recently unveiled its innovative research pipeline and latest growth engine during an investor R&D day in New York, disclosing 12 new molecular entities with "blockbuster potential." These candidates have advanced to the late-stage development, showcasing Sanofi's ambitious goals in the immunology and vaccine fields.
Setting Ambitious Sales Targets:
Sanofi aims to achieve sales figures exceeding €22 billion and €10 billion in the immunology and vaccine sectors, respectively, by 2030. With the unveiling of these 12 pipeline candidates, Sanofi demonstrates its confidence in achieving these targets.
Flagship Leading the Way, Seeking New Opportunities:
In recent years, Sanofi has made strides in areas such as immunology, diabetes, vaccines, rare diseases, and oncology. However, its performance in the diabetes field has been lackluster, and its qualifications in oncology, rare diseases, and cardiovascular areas have been average. To establish a strong foothold in the competitive pharmaceutical market, having a stronghold in a particular therapeutic area is crucial. Fortunately, Sanofi has found its niche in the field of immunology.
Autoimmune diseases represent one of the largest segments in the pharmaceutical market, encompassing conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to psoriasis, as well as atopic dermatitis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This market has already surpassed a value of billions of dollars.
Sanofi's flagship product in the immunology field is Dupixent (dupilumab). With its remarkable performance, Dupixent has secured a prominent position in the field of immune-inflammatory diseases.
As the world's first approved IL-4R monoclonal antibody, Dupixent has experienced rapid sales growth since its initial approval in the UK in 2017. Sales figures have surged nearly 40-fold, from €219 million in 2017 to €8.293 billion in 2022. In the first three quarters of 2023, sales reached an impressive €7.725 billion, including €2.847 billion in Q3 alone. It is highly anticipated that Dupixent will surpass the milestone of €10 billion in sales this year. Remarkably, Dupixent achieved this feat in just six years, establishing itself as a blockbuster "bombshell."
Dupixent has not limited its indications to atopic dermatitis patients. Through meticulous planning, Sanofi has obtained approvals for various age groups in China, covering moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, moderate-to-severe nodular prurigo in adults, adolescents aged 12 years and older, and adults with asthma. This expansion from dermatology to the respiratory field through asthma indication demonstrates Dupixent's broad reach across different age groups.
Following its entry into the respiratory field, Dupixent has also set its sights on another promising indication comparable to atopic dermatitis—chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
In March of this year, Dupixent achieved primary and secondary endpoints in a Phase III clinical trial for treating uncontrolled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. In November, Sanofi announced that the second Phase III clinical trial for treating moderate-to-severe COPD with Dupixent, known as the NOTUS study, also met its primary and key secondary endpoints. Sanofi plans to submit a marketing application for this indication to the FDA by the end of 2023.
Dupixent is the first and only biologic drug to demonstrate a significant reduction in moderate-to-severe COPD exacerbations compared to a placebo within 52 weeks. If approved, it will become the first biologic therapy for COPD and has the potential to ignite another market worth several billion dollars.
According to a report by Precedence Research, the global market for asthma and COPD was valued at approximately $35.3 billion in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.4% projected for the period from 2022 to 2030. With the deep exploration and expansion of respiratory indications, Sanofi expects Dupixent to continue its strong growth from 2023 to 2030, achieving a low double-digit compound annual net sales growth rate.
While Sanofi has successfully harnessed the potential of Dupixent, unlocking its "power," and expanded its global research and development efforts as well as market expansion in China, it appears to lack other blockbuster products and has only a limited number of products with annual sales exceeding $1 billion.
This situation leaves Sanofi vulnerable with its heavy reliance on a single product and limited risk mitigation capabilities. Moreover, despite Dupixent's market coverage, it represents only a fraction of the vast immunology market. Therefore, the search for additional revenue engines remains a top priority for Sanofi, leading to a focus on developing follow-up products.
In conclusion, Sanofi's recent milestone reveals 12 potential blockbuster molecules in the immunology field, with Dupixent leading the way. While Dupixent has been a remarkable success, generating billions of dollars in sales, Sanofi recognizes the need to diversify its product portfolio to reduce reliance on a single product. The 12 pipeline candidates represent Sanofi's ambitious goals in the immunology and vaccine sectors, and the company aims to achieve significant sales figures in these areas by 2030. With ongoing research and development efforts, Sanofi is seeking new opportunities to establish a stronger presence in the competitive pharmaceutical market and tap into the growing demand for treatments in the immunology field.
