Optimistic About the Lithium-Ion Battery Market? Arkema Invests in Startup Tiamat

ECHEMI 2024-01-12

Recently, Arkema announced that it will become a shareholder of Tiamat, a start-up company that designs, develops and sells sodium-ion batteries and was spun off from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in 2017.

This investment will enable Arkema to accelerate the development of technological solutions for sodium-ion batteries that do not use lithium and are not subject to constraints related to the supply of lithium metal.

Arkema contributed to Tiamat’s recent €22 million funding round, together with strategic investors such as Stellantis Ventures and MBDA. With these funds and support from the French government and the European Union, Tiamat hopes to build a 5 GWh gigafactory in France to produce sodium-ion batteries. Arkema said the first 0.7 GWh projects could be operational by the end of 2025, creating around 1,000 jobs.

"Our advanced materials portfolio enables us to provide solutions for all our customers' battery technologies. The sodium-ion technology developed by Tiamat is very interesting as it will be able to eliminate the dependence on lithium and several strategic metals. This business enriches our Ecosystem, fully in line with Arkema's strategy:innovative materials for a sustainable world." Armand Ajdari, Arkema Chief Technology Officer commented.
