Eastman and Axilone Create Sustainable Lipstick Packaging
Axilone, a manufacturer of luxury cosmetics packaging, has a long-term collaboration with Eastman's technical services team on cosmetics innovation. Eastman will provide Axilone with best-in-class lipstick packaging solutions and an environmental commitment to innovation.
The two companies took up the challenge and designed lipsticks for environmentally conscious cosmetics consumers. Their goal was to create a recyclable, refillable lipstick that didn't contain any worrisome materials.
The first step was to replace the ABS with Eastman Cristal One Renew 100 ENO59 PET resin. Since it is compatible with all component PET recycling streams, the single-material packaging does not need to be disassembled before recycling. The packaging is designed to be refilled and reused. It also meets Axilone's need for smooth-glide operation in the mechanism, which is difficult to achieve with most other recyclable resins.
Newly developed lipsticks last beyond their initial use period. Users can purchase refills and recycle the containers after use. Consumers will feel good knowing their purchases support the circular economy. The lipstick's main packaging uses Eastman's molecular recycling technology and is made from 100% certified recycled materials. The new design is also compatible with standard trim options, offering a sleek appearance, perfect color compatibility and superior durability.
When designing with Cristal Renew, brands can choose packaging from up to 100% certified recycled materials. This helps prevent plastic waste from entering landfills or incinerators. Cristal One Renew ENO59 is part of Eastman's Cristal One resin family and is compatible with PET recycling streams.
Reynald Trochel, Director of Innovation at Axilone, said: "Reducing the environmental impact of our products is at the core of Axilone's mission. Through our collaboration with Eastman, we are creating a single-material lipstick made from Cristal Renew with 100% certified recycled content, and enhancing its recyclability, enhancing the flow of the circular economy through refillable packaging."
