Aqemia, an AI Pharmaceutical Company, Secures ¥470 Million in Series A Funding and Attracts the Attention of Sanofi

ECHEMI 2024-02-01

Aqemia, a pioneering biotech company at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum physics, has recently announced a remarkable achievement. The company has successfully raised ¥470 million (approximately $70 million) in Series A funding. This substantial investment further solidifies Aqemia's position in the field of drug discovery and has captured the interest of global pharmaceutical giant Sanofi. In this article, we delve into the details of Aqemia's funding, its unique approach to drug discovery, and the significance of its partnership with Sanofi.

Series A Funding:
On January 30th, Aqemia revealed that it had secured ¥30 million in Series A funding. This funding round follows a previous round in October 2022, which raised an equal amount, bringing the total Series A funding to a substantial ¥60 million ($70 million). The latest investment will enable Aqemia to accelerate the growth of its proprietary GenAI and deep physics-based drug discovery platforms, as well as expand its fully-owned drug discovery projects and asset pipeline.

Aqemia's Approach to Drug Discovery:
Aqemia differentiates itself from other AI-driven platforms by combining quantum physics and machine learning techniques. Unlike traditional AI platforms that rely on training models with experimental data, Aqemia employs large-scale and efficient physics-based computations from the inception of each research project, generating crucial data internally. This unique approach empowers Aqemia to design novel drug molecules using its generative AI and deep physics algorithms.

Partnership with Sanofi:
Sanofi, a leading global pharmaceutical company, is not the first to recognize Aqemia's potential. In December 2021, Aqemia signed a collaboration agreement with Servier, a prominent French pharmaceutical company, to facilitate small molecule drug discovery targeting undisclosed immune oncology targets. The recent partnership with Sanofi, which includes a $140 million drug discovery agreement, further validates Aqemia's capabilities and highlights its growing importance in the pharmaceutical industry.

Future Prospects:
Aqemia has experienced remarkable growth since its establishment in 2019 as a spin-off from the Paris Graduate School. With a team of over 50 talented professionals, Aqemia has established multiple collaborations with major pharmaceutical companies and initiated its drug discovery pipeline, encompassing projects ranging from hit generation to in vivo testing, primarily in oncology and immune oncology. The company aims to advance its technologies into clinical trials, with the first trial expected to commence in 2025.

Aqemia's recent Series A funding milestone of ¥470 million reflects the confidence and recognition it has garnered within the pharmaceutical industry. The company's unique integration of AI and quantum physics has positioned it as a frontrunner in drug discovery, attracting significant investments and partnerships with industry leaders such as Sanofi. With its promising approach and growing pipeline, Aqemia is poised to revolutionize the field of pharmaceutical research and contribute to the development of novel therapies for various diseases.
