Henkel Acquires Vidal Sassoon's Chinese Business from P&G
German consumer goods company Henkel has signed an agreement with Procter & Gamble (P&G) to acquire Vidal Sassoon in Greater China, including the Vidal Sassoon brand and its hair care-related Chinese business, to strengthen its influence in the luxury hair care market in China. The acquisition is subject to closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
In 2023, Vidal Sassoon’s sales in China exceeded 200 million euros. Henkel said the acquisition will complement its portfolio of local consumer brands in China by filling gaps in its high-end retail segment.
Wolfgang König, Executive Vice President Consumer Brands at Henkel, said: "With this acquisition, we are able to offer Chinese consumers a complete portfolio of hair care innovations: Schwarzkopf, Schwarzkopf Professional, Shiseido Professional and Vidal Sassoon."
Henkel CEO Carsten Nobel said the move was part of the company's broader strategic plan to grow in the Chinese market. "We are seeking targeted acquisitions to actively shape and strengthen our portfolio, and this transaction will be a significant transformation for our consumer brands business in China. This attractive and growing market provides opportunities to further expand our business in one of our core categories. " Noble said.
Vidal Sassoon was founded by the late British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, who gained recognition in the 1960s for styling the hair of celebrities. The hair care brand was acquired by Procter & Gamble in the 1980s.
