Corteva launches herbicide Tolvera™ in the United States with Tolpyralat, a new component of HPPD

Corteva recently launched Tolvera™, a new herbicide containing Tolpyralate and Bromoxynil, in the United States for the control of broadleaf and grass weeds in spring and winter wheat, durum wheat and barley fields.

Tolvera™ has two different mechanisms of action that help combat the spread of resistant weeds while providing greater flexibility in application and crop rotation. At present, the product has been approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency and is scheduled to be launched in 2025.

According to Corteva, Tolvera™ offers grain growers a new and highly effective weed control tool to help maximize crop yields. At the same time, it has expanded the selection of subsequent crop rotations to include peas, lentils, rapeseed, chickpeas, soybeans and sunflowers, among others, giving growers a nine-month planting cycle.

As a cream-based formulation (EC) product, Tolvera™ is compatible with a variety of herbicides, including Quelix® herbicides, OpenSky® herbicides, Pixxaro® EC herbicides, Stinger® HL herbicides and Tarzec® herbicides. In addition, Tolvera™ provides growers with a wide application window from the first leaf stage to the tillering stage to achieve optimal control of weeds less than 4 inches tall.

Tolpyralate is a novel HPPD inhibitor herbicide developed by Ishihara Sangyo in Japan and licensed to Corteva for the U.S. and Western Canadian markets. The herbicide provides farmers with canning flexibility, ease of use, and effective control of a variety of challenging weeds, including common resistant bioforms such as Kochia scop aria, tumbleweed, Debregeasia orientalis and barnyard grass. Launched in 2017, the herbicide was initially registered on corn and applied after seedlings to control broad-leaved weeds. Its global sales in 2019 were $30 million.
