EU Releases Assessment of Confirmed Data on Maximum Residue Limits for Myclobutanil

In a recent development, the European Union (EU) has published an evaluation report regarding the confirmed data on maximum residue limits (MRLs) for myclobutanil. This assessment conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) focuses on apples, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, and melons. The findings of this evaluation shed light on the regulatory measures concerning the presence of myclobutanil residues in these food commodities.


The EFSA received a request from Corteva Agriscience, the applicant, to review the confirmatory data for myclobutanil as part of the MRL review under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. The original data on the triazole derivative metabolites (TDMs) were deemed insufficient, prompting the submission of new residue trials specifically analyzing TDMs in apples, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, and melons.


Following a thorough assessment of the submitted data, EFSA concluded that the confirmatory data gaps outlined in Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 were successfully addressed for pome fruits, grapes, cucurbits with inedible peel, strawberries, and tomatoes. Moreover, the evaluation included an examination of consumer exposure to TDMs, which demonstrated no concerns regarding the intake of these residues from the crops under consideration.


However, it is important to note that no information was provided to address the Article 12 confirmatory data mentioned in Regulation (EU) 2020/770 for blackberries, gooseberries, bananas, aubergines/eggplants, lamb's lettuces/corn salads, beans (with pods), globe artichokes, hops, sugar beet roots, and products of animal origin. For these commodities, the existing EU MRLs may be lowered to the enforcement limit of quantification (LOQ).


In the case of kaki/Japanese persimmon and azararoles/Mediterranean medlars, the existing EU MRLs are based on Codex MRLs for pome fruits. Although the applicant did not request maintaining Codex MRLs for these commodities, a risk management decision might be necessary for azararoles/Mediterranean medlars. However, no consumer intake concerns were identified for these specific crops.


The recent assessment conducted by the EFSA on myclobutanil residues in apples, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, and melons provides valuable insights into the maximum residue limits for these food commodities within the EU. By addressing data gaps and evaluating consumer exposure, the EFSA aims to ensure the safety and compliance of these products with established regulatory standards. Continued monitoring and evaluation of pesticide residues in food contribute to safeguarding public health and maintaining consumer confidence in the EU's food supply chain.
