Mexico has postponed a ban on imports of genetically modified corn until 2025

Recently, the Mexican government announced that it will delay the ban on the import of genetically modified corn from the United States, which was scheduled to be implemented in March 2024, until 2025.

This decision aims to protect the diversity of native corn varieties while reducing or eliminating the use of controversial herbicides such as Glyphosate; To assess more fully the potential impact of the ban on domestic agricultural production and food security and to seek appropriate response strategies.

The delay provides an additional window of time for the Mexican government and the agricultural industry to assess and mitigate the potential economic impact of the ban and explore sustainable alternative agricultural practices. This transition period is particularly critical for the seed industry, which may need to adjust production strategies to accommodate new import regulations, including increased cultivation of non-GMO and alternative crops. 

This decision by Mexico has sparked an important discussion about the role of agricultural biotechnology in global trade. Currently, corn imported into the United States is mainly used for animal feed and industrial purposes, and does not directly affect traditional food products in Mexico, such as tortillas and white corn dough. While the ban is delayed, Mexican authorities will continue to find alternatives to glyphosate and other potentially dangerous agrochemicals to ensure the sustainability of agricultural production.
