Sika opens crude fiber production center in Peru

ECHEMI 2024-04-29

Sika is opening a state-of-the-art factory in Lima, Peru, to produce synthetic crude fibers and expand the launch of a product range with huge growth potential in Latin America.

With this innovative technology, Sika further strengthens its position as a leading supplier to the mining industry and a strong partner for infrastructure projects.

Synthetic crude fibers are based on advanced technologies in the construction and static reinforcement of concrete structures. They eliminate the need to install traditional steel bars, reducing construction time and costs while improving the performance of cured concrete.

Furthermore, this innovative technology significantly extends the service life of concrete structures compared to steel bars. These factors have a positive sustainability impact on green building ratings such as the international LEED certification system.

Americas Regional Manager Mike Campion said: "Growing transportation demands in urban environments require efficient transportation infrastructure, such as new road tunnels and subway systems.

At the same time, growing global demand for critical minerals is driving the need for crude fibers to ensure safety. "With our state-of-the-art facility in Peru, we are able to offer customers across Latin America a full range of concrete technologies while meeting the most demanding sustainability requirements of construction projects."

Global demand for crude fiber is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. A quarter of this demand comes from Latin America, particularly the mining and tunneling industry, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25% over the next five years. Peru is Latin America's leading mining country and is expected to experience the highest production growth in the region.
