Dow adds 80,000 tons/year propylene glycol production capacity in Thailand
Dow announced on the 16th that its integrated manufacturing plant in Map Ta Phut, Rayong Province, Thailand has launched the expansion of propylene glycol production capacity to promote the growth of downstream propylene glycol in the personal care, pharmaceutical, food, flavor and fragrance markets.
The incremental investment with low capital intensity and high return rate has increased the annual propylene glycol production capacity by 80,000 tons, and the total output has reached 250,000 tons per year, making the Dow Map Ta Phut plant the largest propylene glycol production base in the Asia-Pacific region.
The backward integration of the Map Ta Phut plant provides a cost-competitive and reliable supply position for key upstream propylene glycol raw materials such as propylene oxide to aid the growth of the downstream high-value propylene glycol market.
Jane Palmieri, President of Industrial Intermediates and Infrastructure said:"As one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regions in the world, this capacity expansion will help us strengthen our innovation and manufacturing capabilities for customers in Asia Pacific and beyond. The expansion of the Map Ta Phut plant not only optimizes our existing asset infrastructure, but also strengthens our regional and global leadership in the industry, allowing us to better serve our customers."
Dow's leading propylene glycol franchise upgrades essential chemical ingredients to produce high-quality ingredients for cosmetics, foods, pharmaceuticals and many other products used every day. The company is promoting sustainable propylene glycol production using low-carbon energy and adopting mass balance methods under ISCC PLUS certification at global propylene glycol manufacturing plants to promote the use of biological recycling and recycled raw materials.
To date, Dow has launched new propylene glycol solutions with externally proven sustainability benefits in North America, Europe and Latin America. Dow Map Ta Phut propylene glycol plant plans to obtain ISCC PLUS certification by the end of 2024.
