Revolutionary Wheat Breakthrough: Argentina Becomes First to Commercially Sell GMO Drought and Herbicide-Resistant HB4 Wheat Seed
In a historic move, Argentina's Bioceres company has announced the commercial sale of its genetically modified HB4 wheat seed, marking the first time genetically modified wheat has been made available for sale globally. The HB4 wheat variety, developed by Bioceres, has been engineered to exhibit remarkable drought tolerance and resistance to the herbicide glyphosate.
According to Bioceres CEO Federico Trucco, the initial target customers for this pioneering product are agricultural input retailers in Argentina. As the HB4 wheat gains further approvals from governments and industry bodies around the world, Bioceres is poised to scale up the commercialization of this innovative crop.
The key trait of the HB4 wheat is its ability to thrive in dry conditions, outperforming traditional wheat varieties by up to 20% in yield under drought stress. This characteristic is of critical importance for many regions globally facing water scarcity. Additionally, the HB4 wheat's tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate can enhance agricultural productivity while reducing environmental impact.
HB4 wheat has now been approved for food and feed use in countries including Argentina, the United States, Brazil, Australia, Colombia, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, and Paraguay. Notably, Argentina and Brazil have both approved the commercial cultivation of HB4 wheat, positioning them as global leaders in the development and commercialization of genetically modified wheat.
As the first country to approve large-scale planting and market entry of genetically modified wheat, Argentina is at the forefront of this technological breakthrough. The nation began trials of GM wheat as early as 2013, with plans to bring it to market within three years. In October 2020, Argentina became the first country globally to approve the cultivation and sale of HB4 wheat, and Bioceres reported that the country was already growing approximately 55,000 hectares of the crop at the time, seeking to expand its production.
Brazil, meanwhile, was the first country to approve the import of Argentina's drought-tolerant, glyphosate-resistant HB4 wheat. The Brazilian government's agricultural research agency, Embrapa, plans to expand testing of various drought-tolerant GM wheat varieties, aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat production. The agency estimates that evaluating the adaptation of GM wheat to Brazil's tropical conditions will require around four years of research.
The rapid global development of the GM crop industry is evident, with genetically modified crop acreage increasing year-over-year. According to data from the consulting firm AgbioInvestor, in 2023, global GM crop planting area grew by 1.9% to 206.3 million hectares (509.7 million acres), reaching a new historical high. Argentina ranks third globally in terms of GM crop area, with approximately 23.1 million hectares (57.1 million acres) of GM crops in 2023, including around 43,700 hectares of GM wheat.
This landmark achievement by Argentina in the commercialization of drought and herbicide-resistant GM wheat signifies a transformative moment for global agriculture, offering farmers and consumers alike the potential to address critical challenges of water scarcity and sustainable food production.
