Flint Group’s 2030 carbon reduction target certified by SBTi
Flint Group has announced that its 2030 carbon reduction target has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is committed to reducing scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 46.2% by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline. Flint Group is a provider of ink and coating solutions for the printing and packaging industries.
SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.
Matthew Rowland-Jones, Sustainability Officer at Flint Group, said: "We are delighted that our 2030 carbon reduction target has been approved by the SBTi. This recognition represents a lot of work across the business to develop detailed plans to reduce emissions and address climate change. Carbon reduction is part of our long-term sustainability vision and strategy ‘PRISM’. PRISM groups the broader theme of sustainability into three core areas where we can have the greatest impact, namely ‘Products, Planet and People’. The real work begins now, it’s time to put our plans into action."
"Our initiatives will include increasing our use of low-carbon materials, which currently account for more than 60% of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We are also investing more than 75% of our R&D costs into sustainability-focused ink and coating solutions, such as barrier coatings, which make packaging structures more recyclable on the path to a circular economy."
"With the SBTi-approved target achieved, we are sending an additional signal to our customers that we care about their carbon reduction and scope 3 emissions. It is important to note that while we have many exciting initiatives across our products and operations, no one business can solve all sustainability challenges alone. We are working with our core stakeholders, including customers, suppliers and the wider value chain, to create lasting positive change for the better in the printing and packaging industry."
To achieve its science-based targets, Flint Group is working towards a transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2030. The company aims to achieve this through on-site generation. This includes solar panels and energy market schemes such as green tariffs and power purchase agreements. The company is also considering phasing out gas-fired systems in favour of low-carbon alternatives such as electrification and heat pumps.
