Vietnam's Rice Exports Have Increased By 38% In Value During The First Five Months Of This Year
Vietnam's Vietnam Economic newspaper reported on June 9th, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, the national rice export volume reached an astonishing nearly 4.2 million tons in the first five months of 2024, up nearly 15% from the same period last year. This growth trend is not only reflected in quantity, but also in the amount, with the export value reaching about $2.7 billion, up a whopping 38% from the same period last year. This data not only showcases the strong competitiveness of Vietnamese rice in the international market, but also highlights the vibrant development of Vietnam's agriculture.
It is reported that the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) stated that the recent significant increase in Vietnam's rice exports can be mainly attributed to India's policy adjustments as a major rice exporter in the world. Recently, India implemented a ban on the export of regular rice to stabilize domestic food prices. This measure has led to an expected shortage in the global rice market, thereby triggering an increase in the import demand for Vietnamese rice from many countries.
Among many markets, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, and Ghana have become the main importers of Vietnamese rice. Especially the Philippines, as an important export partner of Vietnamese rice, the amount of rice exported from Vietnam to the Philippines has reached 1 million tons so far this year, and it is expected that this year will break through the 4 million ton mark. Currently, Vietnamese rice accounts for more than 80% of the Philippine rice import market, becoming the absolute mainstay of the Philippine rice market.
In addition, VFA stated that the target export value of Vietnamese rice for 2024 has been set at $5 billion, an increase of $300 million from the export value in 2023. This target not only reflects Vietnam's confidence in the rice export market, but also shows Vietnam's agricultural sector's determination to improve rice production and quality.
It is worth mentioning that the successful export of Vietnamese rice is not accidental. For many years, the Vietnamese government has attached great importance to agricultural development, and has introduced advanced agricultural technologies and management experiences to continuously improve rice production and quality. At the same time, Vietnam has actively explored international markets and established stable trade relations with many countries. These factors have collectively contributed to the good reputation and widespread recognition of Vietnamese rice in the international market.
However, facing future challenges and opportunities, Vietnam needs to remain clear-headed and perceptive.
On the one hand, the competition in the global rice market is increasingly fierce, and Vietnam needs to continuously improve its competitiveness to respond to challenges from other countries; On the other hand, climate change and other factors may also bring negative impacts on agricultural production, and Vietnam needs to take effective measures to address these potential risks.
In summary, Vietnam's rice exports in the first five months of 2024 have been impressive. With the continuous changes and development of the global rice market, Vietnam is expected to maintain this good momentum in the future and further enhance its status and influence in the rice export sector.
