Is transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 safety?
Transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 is a specific barley seed extract developed and produced for skin care applications. It is said to contain high-quality, endotoxin-free growth factors produced from the endosperm tissue of the barley plant Hordeum vulgare.
While sh-oligopeptide-1 is a 6 kDa protein consisting of 53 amino acid residues and 3 intramolecular disulfide bonds. Human tissues such as platelets, parotid glands and submandibular glands are rich in sh-oligopeptide-1.
sh-oligopeptide-1 was originally discovered in human urine and mouse submandibular glands, where it plays a major role in regulating cell proliferation by attaching to the receptor EGFR on the cell membrane. In addition, sh-oligopeptide-1 has multiple effects as it also initiates cytoplasmic processes such as actin depolymerization and membrane ruffle formation. Research suggests that sh-oligopeptide-1 and its receptors may be important components of the cell nucleus, highlighting the complexity of sh-oligopeptide-1-mediated cellular responses.
Controversy of sh-oligopeptide-1 in the beauty industry
sh-oligopeptide-1 has entered the beauty market through modern medicine. sh-oligopeptide-1 is a polypeptide or amino acid molecule chain used to accelerate wound healing, which can stimulate skin growth at the cellular level. It can also increase collagen production, although there is no definitive evidence. The success of transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 as a therapeutic agent has led many in the beauty industry to apply its efficacy to anti-aging products.
However, many consumers are skeptical about the anti-aging beauty effects of this substance. Because wounds are not equal to wrinkles; skin contours damaged by the sun and time are not equal to skin damaged by injury, and this is the problem. While sh-oligopeptide-1 sounds like a miracle cream that will allow us to regain a fresher, more youthful look every week or even every day, there isn’t enough research to prove its positive effects on mature skin. In fact, early testing has linked its use to psoriasis and skin irritation caused by overproduction of skin cells.
Safety of transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 in skin care products
Including transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 in cosmetics may raise safety concerns, as anything that triggers EGFR may promote the growth of harmful cells, potentially leading to diseases like skin cancer. It’s important to note that sh-oligopeptide-1 derived from plants and fungi, like transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1, does not offer increased safety than sh-oligopeptide-1 derived from humans.
EGFR inhibitors are used to treat cancer. This means that stimulating EGF may not be a good idea. EGFR inhibitors are used as cancer treatments to treat certain malignancies, including small cell lung cancer.
Systemic inhibition of EGFR with these drugs can reduce overgrowth of epidermal cells, but may also trigger side effects such as inflammation, folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, xerosis, changes in hair growth dynamics, and nail disorders. So we really don’t know if transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 is safe in skin care – it can certainly affect many cellular processes.
When applied topically, growth factors don’t penetrate the skin very well. Perhaps this is why we don’t see cases of skin cancer in people who use transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 serums in their daily skin care routine.
In summary, there is no research that can prove that transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 can be used safely in skin care products, whether it is transgenic barley sh-oligopeptide-1 or sh-oligopeptide-1. Especially as a beauty product, it should be used with caution.
