Beckers becomes first company in coil coatings industry to set 2050 net zero emissions target

ECHEMI 2024-07-08

Beckers has become the first coil coatings company to commit to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 as part of its wider aspiration to reduce emissions across its value chain. The company has committed to setting climate targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets will be submitted to the SBTi in due course.

Between 2013 and 2023, Beckers reduced absolute CO2 equivalent emissions (scope 1 and 2) from its own operations by 51%. But with more than 98% of the company’s emissions coming from customers and suppliers (scope 3), Beckers had to work with the entire value chain. “We are proud to be the first company in the coil coatings industry to commit to a net zero emissions target. Our proactive value chain approach to reducing our climate impact is a clear competitive advantage for us – both now and in the future,” said Gavin Bown, chief technology officer at Beckers.

“We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to drive change. As we work towards our own sustainability goals, we also understand the importance of supporting the efforts of our suppliers and customers. The success of this effort requires joint action across the value chain.”

“Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 will be a challenge across the complex coil coating value chain in which we operate,” explains Nicklas Augustsson, Chief Strategy Officer at Beckers. “But we must continue to do everything we can to succeed, even if we don’t have all the answers or solutions today.”

Beckers’ SBTi commitment reinforces its strategy to rapidly reduce CO2 emissions in the short term, based on the latest science. With the company’s commitment to submit its science-based climate targets to the SBTi, Beckers will continue its transformation to a business with a lower climate impact and transform the way it works with value chain partners.
