BASF and STOCKMEIER Urethanes USA commercialize polyurethane binder
BASF and STOCKMEIER Urethanes USA announce commercial production of Stobielast® S polyurethane binder for playground and recreation flooring made with 100% domestic Biomass Balance (BMB) Lupranate® methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI).
BASF produces BMB MDI at its Verbund facility in Geismar, Louisiana. This achievement represents a key milestone for the flooring industry. It also highlights the commitment of both companies to drive a more sustainable future.
Using BMB Lupranate® in the polyurethane manufacturing process enables STOCKMEIER Urethanes to utilize more sustainable solutions without reformulating, purchasing new production equipment or changing its supply chain. Using mass-balanced isocyanates to manufacture polyurethane binders complements STOCKMEIER Urethanes’ efforts to promote environmental stewardship and the circular economy.
The Stobielast® S product line also includes water-based and solvent-free coatings, GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD GOLD certified products, and USDA certified biobased label products.
“With playground season in full swing across North America, we are excited to be working with BASF as the first U.S. polyurethane pour-in-place (PIP) adhesive manufacturer to establish a domestic partnership for BASF’s BMB isocyanates,” said Christian Martinkat, president and CEO of STOCKMEIER Urethanes USA.
“This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our efforts to strengthen our product innovation and expand our manufacturing capabilities for the surface treatment industry. By offering a high-quality PIP adhesive version produced with renewable raw material MDI, we can take a big step towards making our products more sustainable. This collaboration advances our goal to reduce the global carbon footprint of STOCKMEIER Polyurethanes.”
“BASF Monomers is proud to work with STOCKMEIER Polyurethanes, which is scaling up its more sustainable PIP adhesive production with BMB MDI,” said Stefan Doerr, Senior Vice President, Monomers North America, BASF. “All of our BMB MDI products are certified according to the globally recognized ISCC PLUS and REDcert 2 standards and are produced in the United States.”
BASF’s goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Biorecyclable raw materials used to make BMB MDI play an important role in reducing the product carbon footprint (PCF). It summarizes the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a product at different stages of its life cycle. BASF’s Monomers division is following an ambitious sustainability roadmap. It will expand its portfolio of products with lower CO2 emissions while committing to offer circular options in every major product line by 2025.
Like BASF, STOCKMEIER Urethanes is also committed to sustainability. It actively participates in the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care initiative to enhance health, safety and environmental practices. The company has implemented various sustainability measures. It includes waste reduction and energy efficiency in the production process.
By prioritizing sustainability in its operations and collaborating with stakeholders including customers, suppliers and industry partners, the company is committed to responsible growth and innovation. It aims to meet market demand for greener solutions.
