PPG launches PITT-THERM 909 spray-on insulation coating

ECHEMI 2024-08-22

PPG has announced the launch of PITT-THERM 909 spray-on insulation (SOI) coating. Designed for high-temperature environments in the oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical and other critical infrastructure industries, this silicone coating provides improved safety, asset protection and operational efficiency compared to traditional insulation materials.

Traditional water-based acrylic or epoxy-based SOI coatings cannot be used on equipment operating at temperatures above 350 F (177 C). The silicone-based PPG Pitt-Therm 909 coating offers higher temperature resistance; thermal testing has shown that it can withstand continuous and cyclic temperatures up to 500 F, and by reducing heat transfer, the exterior surface remains safe to touch at temperatures up to 310 F, significantly reducing the risk of burns.

Application testing of PPG Pitt-Therm 909 coating has also shown that fewer coats are required compared to traditional SOI coatings, providing customers with operational efficiency benefits. With a thickness of up to 250 mils (6.35 mm), only one or two coats are required, depending on the specific application requirements, significantly reducing the time and cost of the insulation process. Despite the reduced number of layers, total coating thickness can reach 500 mils, and the cure time is comparable to competitive products. It can also be applied over hot and cold substrates, keeping assets in service during construction, a significant advantage over traditional methods that require downtime.

“PPG Pitt-Therm 909 coating represents our team’s commitment to continuously push industry standards through innovation,” said Bill Pernice, global segment director, PPG oil and gas, protective and marine coatings. “This solution addresses long-standing industry challenges by providing high heat resistance and water resistance, improving safety and performance in demanding environments.”

PPG Pitt-Therm 909 coating also addresses key challenges facing traditional mechanical insulation systems, particularly their susceptibility to moisture absorption and corrosion under insulation (CUI). Water-resistant PPG Pitt-Therm 909 demonstrated superior corrosion resistance in rigorous testing. Results show it is the best solution for preventing CUI, reducing maintenance costs, operational downtime and safety incidents.

Available in the U.S. and Canada, PPG Pitt-Therm 909 coating meets the requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E84 Class A fire rating.
