From Factories to Frontiers: The Industrial Uses of Formaldehyde

Introduction:
Happen to see those preserved animals in chemistry or biological lab? The brownish chemical in which they are contained is formaldehyde (CH2O). It is an organic compound with a simple molecular structure comprising one carbon and an oxygen atom along with two hydrogen atoms. At room temperature, it is found as a pungent and colorless gas, is flammable but highly soluble in water, is toxic, and is usually stored in aqueous solitons as the hydrate CH₂(OH)₂ also called formalin.
Its molecular structure is simple but the presence of the carbonyl group (C=O) in its structure makes it very reactive and has the property to go into additional reactions with water, amines, and alcohols. It can act as a reducing agent and is also used to make polymers for various use cases.
Production of Formaldehyde
The most common method of producing this chemical is by catalytic oxidation of methanol CH3OH carried out in a reactor and is a multi-step process carried out at fairly high temperatures and under controlled conditions. This compound can be found in nature, as a byproduct of combustion (e.g. cigarette smoke, burning in kerosene, etc) and is also found certain numerous natural processes like the decaying of plants and animals and during certain chemical processes in living organisms.
Exposure to this chemical can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat, and higher levels are even reported to cause certain types of cancer. Formalin and formaldehyde, both have significant uses in the current, some of them are explained below.
The Industrial uses of formaldehyde
1. The prime use of this chemical is as Preservatives and Embalming Fluids where it is used in cosmetics, personal care products, and household items. Its feature to stop microbial growth and extend shelf life is practically useful in industries.
2. It is also frequently used in the production of various thermosetting resins including melamine-formaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde, and, etc. During the production of these resins, formaldehyde plays a key role by acting as a cross-linking agent and reacting with other compounds (like melamine, urea, phenol, etc.) resulting in the production of resins with three-dimensional network structures in their molecules.
3. One of the significant industrial uses of formaldehyde is its use in the production of adhesives and binders which are used to bond layers of materials related to wood bonding, textiles, automotive components, and paper and packaging. They do great during reinforcing structures and improve the overall durability and performance of finished products.
4. it is also used frequently in textile and paper treatment processes; the textile industry uses it to finish fabrics and garments and give them a wrinkle-resistance feature. It also improves crease recovery and also controls the shrinkage of the clothes after being washed. For paper indsutry, they are heavily used to improve paper strength and also significantly increase printability, and moisture resistance which is incredibly important for this specific industry.

It is also used in automotive and construction materials such as during the production of foam insulation, sealants used in cars, different types of coatings, and adhesives used in cars, used in automotive manufacturing, building construction, and insulation applications. Along with its adhesive properties, it also provides thermal insulation and soundproofing which is a very significant feature for cars.
It is also used in the production of biocides and disinfectants, as fuel additives, as Chemical Intermediates, and as catalysts in various chemical reactions and industrial processes. People who get exposed to this chemical are advised to take proper medical attention. Humans can also get exposed to this chemical from the air (from unvented fuel-burning appliances, such as gas and wood-burning stoves,) or by absorbing liquids containing formaldehyde through the skin.

Excessive exposure to this chemical can cause cancer and a lighter dose of exposure can cause eye and skin irritations.
