Evonik produces Rohacell foam in an environmentally friendly way at its Darmstadt plant

ECHEMI 2024-09-05

Evonik has upgraded the production of its high-performance foam Rohacell at its main plant in Darmstadt, Germany, to use only electricity from renewable sources. As a result, Evonik's High Performance Polymers business line will reduce CO2 emissions by 3,400 metric tons per year.

"Sustainability is an important component of Evonik's growth strategy for its High Performance Polymers business line. By reducing the overall carbon footprint of Rohacell foam, Evonik is taking a decisive step towards its vision of offering its customers more environmentally friendly solutions," said Dr. Werner Escher, head of the company's Foam and PEEK product line.

The green electricity supply for Rohacell production at the Darmstadt plant is guaranteed by green electricity certificates and special supply contracts, so-called power purchase agreements (PPAs). Using only sustainable energy sources for electricity in production helps reduce emissions, which in turn enables Evonik's Rohacell customers to improve the sustainability of their manufactured products.
