2027 Drug Price Negotiation List Surprises! Novo Nordisk's Diabetes Drug Ozempic May Face Price Shock

ECHEMI 2024-09-18

According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, a senior executive at Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk revealed that the company expects its diabetes drug Ozempic to be "highly likely" to be included in the U.S. government's list for drug price negotiations in 2027. The projection is based on provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, which gave Medicare new powers to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies over the prices of certain prescription drugs. Previously, Medicare already covered millions of Americans age 65 and older, as well as people with disabilities.

Although Novo Nordisk executives have previously said it is too early to assess the specific impact of such talks on Ozempic, Wall Street analysts have generally agreed that the diabetes drug is likely to be on the 2027 negotiating list. Novo Nordisk has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment.

This part of the Inflation Reduction Act is seen as a major step in the government's efforts to control health care costs. By allowing Medicare to negotiate prices, the administration hopes to reduce the price of certain high-value drugs, thereby reducing the financial burden on patients. Ozempic, a widely used diabetes treatment, naturally emerged as a potential candidate on the negotiating list.

However, Novo Nordisk said that it is not yet possible to accurately predict what specific impact the negotiations will have on Ozempic's sales and profits. Still, analysts generally agree that Ozempic's price could be subject to some adjustment if it is included in the negotiations. This will have an important impact on Novo Nordisk's financial position, but it could also have an impact on the cost of medication for diabetics.

Overall, while Novo Nordisk has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment, the Bloomberg report has sparked widespread concern about the future price direction of Ozempic. As 2027 approaches, the pharmaceutical industry and Wall Street analysts will continue to closely monitor the negotiating process and its implications for Ozempic.
