Arkema launches ethyl acrylate based entirely on bioethanol
Arkema, a leader in specialty materials, is now exclusively producing ethyl acrylate made from bioethanol at its acrylic monomers plant in Carling, France. Arkema’s biobased ethyl acrylate has a biocarbon content of 40% and reduces the product’s carbon footprint by up to 30%. The bioethanol is sustainably sourced from biomass feedstocks.
“The exclusive production of bio-sourced ethyl acrylate in Carling, France will have a significant impact on the global industry. It lays the foundation for the next generation of sustainable coatings products, enabling our downstream production and customers to achieve sustainability goals and carbon reduction targets,” said Herve Castres Martin, Global Group President of Acrylic Monomers.
“This will enable Arkema to expand the application of its biobased and low-carbon specialty acrylic resins and additives in coatings to meet the needs of fast-growing markets such as new energy, electric vehicles, comfortable living applications and construction,” added Karine Elie, General Manager of Rheology and Specialty Additives at Arkema.
This new milestone supports Arkema’s roadmap for decarbonizing acrylic products and complements the investments announced in 2023 to optimize production processes and reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 20% at Carling.
