U.S. Department of Agriculture Invests $120 Million to Alleviate Fertilizer Crisis

ECHEMI 2024-11-12

Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture officially announced a major financial support Program through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP), which aims to provide financial support for the domestic fertilizer production industry to increase its production capacity. Under the program, USDA will provide more than $120 million in funding assistance to six fertilizer production projects in Arkansas, California, Illinois, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin. The move is aimed at easing the current tight supply of fertilizers, supporting agricultural production and ensuring food security.

Usda has invested a cumulative $368 million in 67 fertilizer production projects through FPEP. The infusion of these funds will help improve the efficiency and yield of fertilizer production to better meet the needs of U.S. agricultural producers.

Of the projects announced, the one receiving the most financial support belongs to a fertilizer producer called LSB Industries. The company will receive up to $77 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand production capacity at its urea and ammonium nitrate plants in Arkansas. Through this expansion plan, the plant's annual capacity will be increased to 580,000 tons. When completed, the expansion project will provide enough fertilizer products for about 450,000 agricultural producers, effectively easing the tight supply of fertilizer.

Another larger project that received USDA funding came from Agtegra Cooperative in South Dakota. The company will receive a $3 million grant to build a new fertilizer production facility. In addition, the company will install two storage tanks with a total capacity of 950,000 gallons to ensure more efficient and safe storage and transportation of fertilizer products. The implementation of this project will help increase the fertilizer supply capacity in South Dakota and the surrounding region, and further support the development of local agricultural production.

Through these financial support and capacity expansion programs, USDA hopes to effectively improve the overall level of domestic fertilizer production, reduce agricultural production costs, and increase food production, thereby ensuring national food security and sustainable agricultural development.
