Indian Pharmaceutical Market Grows 6.1% in October Against the Trend

ECHEMI 2024-11-13

According to the latest market research data, the Indian pharmaceutical market achieved a sales growth of 6.1% in October despite a decline in overall sales. This growth figure was confirmed by Pharmarack, a heart and skin treatment company. "Most therapies showed positive growth this month (November) despite some challenges," Sheetal Sapale, Pharmarack's vice president of business, said in a recent interview.

Sapale noted that this growth was largely driven by price increases and new product launches, while sales for most therapies actually declined. Among the top 10 therapies that account for more than 90% of the Indian pharmaceutical market, the price factor plays an important role in the cardiac segment. Although the market share of antihypertensive drugs is close to 50%, volume growth has stagnated. At the same time, lipid-lowering drugs and platelet aggregation inhibitors show relatively high growth momentum, helping to promote the health of the heart serum.

In the anti-infection segment, sales of antimicrobials (nearly 87% of the market) have decreased, while the number of antifungal drugs has grown. In the gastrointestinal segment, sales of antacids, which accounted for nearly 40% of the market, declined, while sales of laxatives, probiotics, anti-infective drugs and anti-diarrheal drugs increased. "These factors are the main drivers of volume growth, while antacids are the main drag on this segment," Sapale explained.

In the field of anti-diabetes, the sales volume of oral anti-diabetic drug combinations showed negative growth, but it is expected to have a good growth momentum in the future. According to Pharmarack, sales of new products will increase as many have lost patent protection.

In addition, secret meetings on innovative drugs are also underway to drive further development of the pharmaceutical industry.

In the nutraceuticals market, vitamins and nutraceuticals accounted for 70% of the market share, but sales volume declined, affecting the growth of this segment. Sales of calcium products and other related products also declined, but their contribution to the nutritionist category was relatively small.

Finally, radiopharmaceuticals continue to play an important role in the field of cancer treatment, providing patients with more treatment options and hope.
