Novo Nordisk’s New Drug Could Cause Market Shock: Can a 25% Weight Loss Effect Be Realized?
On November 17, 2024, the Financial Times reported that Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk plans to publish final clinical trial data for its new generation weight loss drug CagriSema next month. According to Novo Nordisk, the results of the trial will prove that CagriSema can help users lose 25 percent of their body weight over a year.
Compared to Novo Nordisc's current flagship product Wegovy (up to 16% weight loss) and rival Eli Lilly's Mounjaro (up to 22.5% weight loss), CagriSema is expected to take a leading position in the GLP-1 weight loss drug market.
Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, CEO of Novo Nordisk, highlighted at the company's third-quarter earnings press conference:
"CagriSema is very important to us as it is a next-generation product that has the potential to be a benchmark in the industry."
The importance of CagriSema cannot be overstated. Recently, Novo Nordisk's share price has failed to keep pace with chief rival Eli Lilly. Novo Nordisk's stock has fallen more than 22% in the past six months, closing at $101.74 a share.
Investors have expressed concerns about Novo Nordisk's ability to meet market demand, as well as poor clinical trial results in September for one of its weight-loss drugs.
However, Jørgensen pointed out that Wegovy has been removed from the shortage list in the United States, which shows that Novo Nordisk has the ability to meet market demand. The volatility in the company's stock price reflects the excessive hype surrounding obesity treatments that may have created a misunderstanding of the state of the company's business.
If CagriSema's clinical data fails to meet expectations, investors may re-evaluate Novo Nordisk's leadership in weight loss treatments.
