Qatar's 1.2 million ton blue ammonia plant starts construction with an investment of US$1.2 billion
Under the patronage of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, Deputy Emir, laid the foundation stone for the Blue Ammonia Plant at a special ceremony held in Mesaieed Industrial City.
The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of Qatar Energy, and senior executives and officials from various entities involved in the implementation of the project.
The Blue Ammonia Plant is the largest of its kind in the world and is an important milestone in Qatar Energy's strategy to expand the clean energy sector by producing low-carbon ammonia - one of the most important solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Saad Sherida Al Kaabi said: "The facility includes an ammonia production unit with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons, and an additional CO2 injection and storage unit with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tons."
"Qatar Energy will provide the new plant with more than 35MW of electricity from the solar power plant currently being built in Messaieed Industrial City to produce blue ammonia. This plant will enhance our ability to provide the world with low-carbon products, in line with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions."
HE Minister Al-Kaabi noted: "In the construction of this facility, we will rely on our capabilities and expertise in building and operating ammonia plants for fertilizer production. This will be carried out in cooperation between Qatar Energy and Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO)."
He added: "The Blue Ammonia Plant joins Qatar Energy's list of large and ambitious expansion projects in Qatar and around the world, covering LNG, oil and gas exploration and production, petrochemicals, fertilizers, solar power generation, etc."
He concluded by thanking the project implementation consortium formed by ThyssenKrupp and CCC, as well as the teams of Qatar Energy and Qatar Petroleum, whose efforts contributed to the realization of the project.
The plant, with an investment of approximately QR4.4 billion (approximately USD1.2 billion), will be built in Mesaieed Industrial City, which has an excellent strategic location, integrated infrastructure, ideal production capacity and a port considered one of the largest petrochemical export facilities in the Middle East.
The plant is expected to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2026, marking a milestone in Qatar Energy's strategy to expand into the clean energy sector.
