Mitsubishi Chemical Group to Expand Negative Electrode Material Production Capacity at Kagawa Plant

Mitsubishi Chemical Group has decided to expand the production capacity of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries used mainly in electric vehicles (EVs) at its Kagawa Plant, with the expansion project scheduled to start in October 2026.

 

Anode materials are one of the main materials for lithium-ion batteries and are made from natural or synthetic graphite.

 

The Group's strengths lie in products made from natural graphite, which have lower greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacturing process and enjoy certain advantages in life cycle assessment.

 

In addition, the Group has developed a grade that outperforms synthetic graphite by using new proprietary technology to suppress expansion that affects battery life, which has been a problem with natural graphite.

 

The Group has decided to increase the production capacity of the Kagawa Plant to produce this grade, thereby strengthening the supply chain and stepping up efforts to make mobile materials more carbon neutral.
