ENEOS and Mitsubishi Chemical Complete Chemical Recycling Facility at Ibaraki Plant

ECHEMI 2025-07-07

ENEOS Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation announced that the new chemical recycling facility built at the MCC Ibaraki Plant to start the plastic-to-oil conversion business has been completed, and a completion ceremony was held on July 2, 2025.

The facility uses Hydrothermal Plastic Recycling Technology (Hydro-PRT) to chemically decompose and convert externally procured waste plastics into oil using supercritical water.

The technology is provided under a license agreement with Mura Technology Ltd. of the United Kingdom. The recycled oil produced using this technology will be used as a feedstock for the two companies' existing refineries and naphtha crackers, and reprocessed into petroleum products and various chemicals and plastics, thereby contributing to the realization of a circular economy.

In addition, the plant plans to obtain ISCC PLUS certification. ISCC PLUS is one of the international certification systems for sustainable products. Once the plant obtains certification, the two companies will be able to provide a variety of products made from recycled oil.
